There's
a fine line between a horror film and a monster film, but there's a
world of difference between the two all the same. The Wolf Man
is firmly a monster film, and an old-school one at that, complete with
creepy old mansions, cobwebs a plenty, fog in every corner and crusty
old farmers banging on about mysterious creatures that prowl the moors
when the moon is full. That doesn't make The Wolfman a success...
The
script is wobbly, the pacing is off, and while Anthony Hopkins hams it
up like crazy, Benicio del Toro tries to be all serious and moody and
doesn't quite make it work for him. But what The Wolfman does deliver is a bunch of Victorian-era gore as Lawrence Talbot (Benicio del
Toro) returns to his family estate after the death of his brother just
in time to see a wolf-like creature eat a whole lot of people then bite
him so when the next full moon comes around a whole lot more people can
be torn into bloody chunks. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, consider this a recommendation.
