It's
seemed like forever since X2 hit the screens and now we finally get a
good look at the third and final instalment of this fantasatic comic
book franchise in this brand new trailer for X-Men: The Last
Stand. The climax of the X-Men
trilogy sees a “cure” for mutancy, which threatens
to alter
the course of history. For the first time, mutants have a choice:
retain their uniqueness, though it isolates and alienates them from the majority population made up by humans, or give
up their powers and become human. The opposing viewpoints of
mutant leaders Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart in the role he was born
to play!), who preaches tolerance, and Magneto, who believes in the
survival of the fittest, are put to the ultimate test - triggering the
war to end all wars. What has set the X-Men
films apart from less successful Comic-book adaptions (Fantastic
Four... cough cough) is it's thematic undertones, and X-Men:
The Final Stand will be no different. Within the framework of an
epic, action-packed story, X3
raises issues with strong contemporary relevance: is conformity an
antidote to prejudice? Is it cowardice to give up individuality to fit
in and avoid persecution? Do ends justify means? Is great
power a
blessing or a curse? There has been alot of buzz
surrounding who will appear (as most X-Men
fans will know by now Kelsey Grammer joins the X-Men as Dr. Henry
McCoy, also known as Beast). Cast members returning include Hugh
Jackman as Wolverine, Halle Berry as Storm, Ian McKellen as Magneto,
Patrick Stewart as Xavier, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, Anna Paquin as
Rogue, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops and Shawn
Ashmore as Iceman. Those reprising their X2
roles meanwhile are
Aaron Stanford as Pyro and Daniel Cudmore as Colossus. Also making an
appearance is ex-soccer star Vinnie Jones as Wolverine's nemesis
Juggernaut, Ben Foster as Angel, Dania Ramirez as Callisto, Eric Dane
as Multiple Man and Cameron Bright as the power dampener Leech. But the
big question remains: where's the cool Cajun Gambit? Perhaps he will turn up in one of the Wolverine
spin-offs which are set for release after X3. Or perhaps he's gone forever... Screenwriters
Zak Penn (Elecktra, Fantatic Four) and
Simon Kinberg (Mr & Mrs Smith, xXx2) team up for the screenplay, so no doubt there will be action
a-plenty and more than one chuckle to be had throughout the film's duration. With
director of the first two instalments, Bryan Singer, off in Australia
shooting the much anticipated Superman Returns -
the reigns have been handed over to Rush Hour and Red
Dragon director
Brett Ratner to bring this monumental franchise to a climatic close.
And before you can boohoo the young director, judging from the
trailer, he seems to have done a smack up job!
This
is going to be one of the biggest movies of the summer, with a record
