Amazingly,
Billy Birmingham is the only Australian artist to have seven
consecutive albums debut at Number One. Who would have guessed it?
Probably not Nostradamus as he seemed to have little knowledge of The
12th Man, or any of the Channel Nine commentry team - nor would we
expect him to know. Yes, it's yet another outing from serial
impersonation artist The 12th Man, who has made quite a substanstial
living off pretending to be someone that he is in fact not (much like
Danii Minouge). And, it's pretty good. Admittedly Burmingham has been
flogging the horse for about 10 years longer than he should have (show
me one person that can quote anything from Bill Lawry ThisIs Your Life), but he has taken these characters on board and really given them a life outside of the rather bland real life equivalents. On this adventure, new Channel Nine CEO Eddie McGuire has "boned" the entire cricket commentary team
(an unsubtle stab at the Mark Llewellyn affidavit that revealed that
McGuire wanted to sack, or "bone" Today
presenter Jessica Rowe), and
replaced them with one person; The Twelfth Man himself, Billy
Birmingham, due to the recent spree of cost-cutting at the Nine
Network. Naturally, this gets the team's captain Richie Benaud
incredibly mad, as Birmingham has made a living from impersonating them
for over 20 years, with no compensation what so ever.
This
has lead to Richie attempting to get himself and the team their jobs
back by running "Operation Kill Billy" (which Bill Lawry believes is a
clever play on words from the "Tintain Quarantino" film). This includes
appearing on Alan Jones's breakfast program and starting a petition,
all to no avail. Also he seeks the assistance of the Prime Minister
John Howard to get their jobs back.
To make matter worse, their
plans are interrupted further due to an injury crisis for the touring
English cricket side which sees both Tony Greig and Mark Nicholas (a
new addition to Burmingham's repoutire - and it's downright hilarious)
being recruited into the team for a test being held at the WACA Ground.
Richie
engages the help of Australian music legend Michael Gudinski, and
Australian Idol host Andrew G (who only agreed to make an appearance on
the album if he got to drop the f-bomb), to create a modern cover
version of Birmingham's hit "Marvellous". There are plenty of
laughs to be had with this one. I managed to get through the two disc's
on a trip up and back to the beach with a few of the boys and it really
does the trick of making the drive go by a lot quicker. While it
doesn't have the consistent laughs (and element of originality) that
the earlier efforts included, it's an enjoyable edition to the saga. Keep
an ear out for Kerry Packer's guest appearance, as well as Michael
Gudinski's need to tell everyone that "He had a big one lasy night".
