Aria Awards 2008

NOMINATION NEWS

The one-thousand strong ARIA Awards voting academy has spoken in what is arguably the most eclectic and exciting group of music artists to land on the ARIA honour roll in years.

Nominees across 28 categories in the 2008 ARIA Awards have been announced highlighting the depth and diversity of talent across all genres of the Australian music community.

The big surprise was the vase number of emerging Australian artists to receive their first ever ARIA Award nods, with two leading the nominations field.

There were no surprises when vocal powerhouse Gabriella Cilmi received six nods for her debut album "Lessons to be Learned", including nominations for SINGLE OF THE YEAR (Sweet About Me), BEST FEMALE ARTIST, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE, BEST POP RELEASE and HIGHEST SELLING SINGLE.

All that, and the girl has barely had time to clean up the mess from her 'Sweet 16' Party!

The other major news comes in the form of Sam Sparro (who was just announced as the headline act for the Good Vibrations Festival) who was nominated for five ARIA Awards including SINGLE OF THE YEAR (Black and Gold), BEST MALE ARTIST, BEST POP RELEASE, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM (Sam Sparro) and BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE.

Also receiving four ARIA Award nominations are those "Are-They-Lesbian-Or-Are-They-Straight" twins from Queensland, The Veronicas, in the categories of BEST POP RELEASE (Hook Me Up), HIGHEST SELLING ALBUM (Hook Me Up) and two nominations in the HIGHEST SELLING SINGLE category for Pick Me Up and Untouched.

Electronic duo The Presets capped off an incredible year with four nominations for their second album "Apocalypso" and the hugely popular single My People. They have received salutes in the categories of BEST GROUP, BEST DANCE RELEASE, SINGLE OF THE YEAR and ALBUM OF THE YEAR.
