Hot Pick: Ben Lee - New Clip
By James Wan
I've been pre warned by one of Web Wombat's most respected writers
that I need to specify at the very beginning of this article - that the
following track is terrible.
However...
We are allowed to specify that the clip for this "banal" song, is actually pretty damn cool.
For many, Ben Lee
is still just the arrogant, ugly youngster that has quickly risen the
ranks of the music industry with his quirkily catchy tunes. Now -
remind me again why this is a bad thing?
Aren't we better off supporting a home grown artist with actual talents as opposed to keeping Fergie in a job?
His latest track American Television (from the album "Ripe")is
by no means Lee's best musical outing. It's pretty cheesy, fairly
generic (which, you kind of get the feeling that it's exactly what he's
going for) and - in the words of our respected journo "Banal".
The
thing is - Lee is a clever fellow. His songs and clips and tongue in
cheek, and if they sound generic - there's probably a reason behind
other than being unoriginal. The latest clip is a throwback to the
golden era of the early 90s, starring Ben and former Saved By THe Bell hottie Tiffani Thiessen. The video, produced by Ken Franchi and directed by Todd Strauss Schulson, covers everything from Alf, Nintendo, Doogie Howser and Calvin Klein. It's all spot on as well!
Ben Lee (fluro colours and all) and his ever so chessily catchy
track - this weeks Web Wombat
