I really hate "Special Tour Edition" CDs, even from artists that I love.
The fans have probably already bought the album at the original time of
release and then the record company sees the chance to gouge a few more
dollars out of us by re-releasing it with a couple of extra tracks or a
video, thinking that we will buy it twice.
When Dylan first released "Modern Times" in 2006 it was rightly hailed
as a cracker of an album by an artist who strides the music world like
Colossus.
Few artists can release three and four CD set retrospectives that
simply scratch the surface of their talent and leave you hungry for
more and fewer still have you genuinely excited as to what their next
new album will be like. "Modern Times" is worth $25 of anyone’s money.
As you would expect from Dylan, it has love, pathos, darkess, light,
humour, poignancy and more within knockout tunes all supported by a
band who are not just tight but hermetically sealed.
The greatness of "Modern Times" is clear from track one; the glorious,
storming Thunder
on the Mountain. Who else but Dylan could get away with
rhyming, 'Sons of bitches' with 'orphanages' and have it work?
The standard simply never dips at any point throughout the album, all
the way to the dark and broody Ain’t Talkin.
So, as for 'extras' you get Deluxe cardboard packing and a Bonus DVD
disc with performances of Blood
in my Eyes, Love
Sick, Cold
Irons Bound and Things Have Changed.
For completists, this might convince them to re-buy, especially if you
too think that Things
Have Changed is the best song and video that Dylan has
done in the last 10 years. Some call. For others, they might just stick
to their original copy and watch the other DVD songs on YouTube.
