Every few years a band comes along
that completley changes the face of the music scene. Whether it be
artistically (Jimmy Hendrix, The Pixies, Underworld) or whether it be
commercially (Nirvana, Jet), history has shown that the human race is
capable of amazing things.
Braindead Lovers are quite obviously abesent from that list...
As much as I would love to even give Aussie boys Braindead Lovers
the benefit of the doubt by saying something along the lines of "Had
this been released five years earlier, it might have had more impact" -
I simply can't do it without sullying my conscience.
Because
there is no real way of sugar coating it, Braindead Lovers are as bland
and unoriginal a band you will ever come across. To cement my point -
how Braindead Lovers were picked out and given the opportunity to be
signed by a label from the barrage of other try-hard Bon Jovi bands
they would have played alongside each week at Ding Dong Lounge is
beyond me.
Opener Sappers Appetite
is promising with a chorus familar, but catchy enough, to define it as
it's own product. But from there it's simply a collection of carbon
copies - at point sounding like the sort of sterotyped 'Rock' songs
which are played in the background of one of those cheesy Saturday
Morning Kids Shows like Degrassi : The Next Generation (you know the ones, usually one of the characters joins a rock band and has some kind of 'hit' song).
The
sad fact is, there is a big audience out there for this sort of junk.
But, at the end of the day, Braindead Lovers will soon blend into the
background - continue playing to the same audiences, continue to wear
ripped jeans and walk around with an arrogant swagger.
They will
also continue to go on, unaware that their look and sound keep them
almost unrecognisable from any other band of their ilk.
