I
recall I was stuck in a line at Target with my mum (there's a fair
chance she was buying me an over sized jumper to "Grow in to" - an 11
year old's biggest nightmare) the night Crowded House's final concert
was aired live across the nation on November 26th, 1996. I
wasn't a huge fan of Crowded House, in fact, I'd only ever heard about
it from my bestest buddy in the whole world's brother. So the only song
I really recall hearing was the opening lines of Means To Me
- you know the one, "She came all the way from America..". In
fact, to this day, that one song brings back so many memories from that
period of my life - and you know what, I'm pretty certain I'm not the
only person who has been affected by a Crowded House track. On
November 26th over 250,000 punters sat, stood and crowd surfed to the
tunes of Neil Finn, the late great Paul Hester and Nick Seymour. All
with their own memories - perhaps the first pash you ever
recived to Better Be Home Soon or that getting over that girlfriend by listening to Four Seasons In One Day endlessly. Going on that summer bender with Something So Strong
on the car cassette player. Everyone had their own reasons for tuning
in. And after ten years, it's finally made it's way onto CD. A
heck of a lot has happened in those ten years - Finn went onto another
UK success with his brother Tim (who had yet another solo disaster
recently), Seymour went his own way, while Hester went onto a series of
successful TV gigs including The Mick Molloy Show, Hessie's Shed and the host of the fantastic MusicMax Sessions - and unexpectingly taking his own life.
All those who were touched by the band also progressed in those ten
years. Some may have had children, some may have gone to uni, some may
have ended up working at Web Wombat. But no matter where they are now,
there is one concert that will unite them - and remind them of a time
in their life that we often forget to remember. The songs here are all classics. From the sweet (Weather With You, Fall At Your Feet) to upbeat (When You Come, Locked Out) there was something to complement every mood of the event. It's
a superb double disc which captures the essence of the event perfectly,
the emotion, the saddness, the joy and the relief of the band - and
there is certain to be a different favourite for everyone (my personal
fav is the up tempo classic, Sister Madly). And while the boys may have thought to Dream It's Over, this tenth avinversary is certain to ensure that the memories are captured forever, that the dream is never over.
