The
Falls Music and Arts Festival is one of Australia’s longest running
festivals, now in its 9th and 19th years in Tasmania and Victoria
respectively. There are around 70 performers on the bill ranging
diversely from musicians to comedians and arts performers.
Well
amigos let us begin, just a taste of this year’s line-up, enough to
start you dreaming of long hot summer days and those magic summer
nights at The Falls Music & Arts Festival...
Drum roll please... there is no better way to kick off a line up announcement than with Arctic Monkeys!
These
darlings of the British indie scene will ride into Falls on a wave of
acclaim from their latest release Suck It And See. Over the last six
years Arctic Monkeys have cemented their place as one of the most
revered acts of our time, their debut LP Whatever People Say I Am,
That’s What I’m Not (2006) is the fastest selling debut album in UK
history.
They’ve sold out huge venues worldwide and headlined
all of the major festivals across the globe, in December 2011 they will
grace the stage of The Falls Music & Arts Festival for the very
first time.
If you happened to be at Lorne in 2009 you
would have witnessed the overflowing Grand Theatre mid afternoon, when
every single patron on site jammed in to catch a hilarious set from
comedic genius Arj Barker.
A household name in Australia
thanks to his legendary role in Flight Of The Conchords, his YouTube
series Arj and Poopy and his regular stand up tours Arj wrote himself
into Falls folk lore with his last performance and we can’t wait to see
what he delivers for his next.
Spinning an entirely new
concept on the greatest concept album of all time, Easy Star All Stars
will be performing Dub Side of the Moon in 2011.
A twist on
the classic is what they do best. Taking memorable albums and putting a
dub / ska / reggae twist on them, giving them new life. Easy Star All
Stars have remastered the likes of OK Computer and Sgt. Peppers Lonely
Hearts Club Band, but it’s the Pink Floyd rendition that has won them
the most love and will be played in entirety to Falls.
With a
members list reading like a who’s who of the New York dub/jazz scene
they are certainly one act to mark as a must see on this years line up.
Seattle’s favourite folk rockers Fleet Foxes have become pretty
damn famous since they left us speechless with their mind blowing set
at Falls back in 2008. Amassing the kind of critical acclaim that their
contemporaries’ dream of, Fleet Foxes have been busily touring the
world, supporting musical royalty like Neil Young and creating their
stunning sophomore album, Helplessness Blues.
The latest jewel
in the Australian music crown and clear crowd favourite of last year,
The Jezabels will return to Falls with fresh set list of new
material. Virtually unknown 18 months ago, this Sydney 4
piece have been causing a stir both locally and internationally thanks
to their solid live shows and spectacular recordings. Clash Magazine in
the UK hailing them as THE band to watch after their performance at the
UK’s Great Escape earlier this year.
Aotearoa’s
legendary singer songwriter Tim Finn hardly needs an introduction. He
has been behind some of the most memorable songs ever written, a
founding member of Split Enz, a sometimes member of Crowded House, and
a much loved solo performer, his voice is one we’d like to have narrate
our dreams.
With a rich musical history and a back catalogue
exploding with spine tingling hits, we welcome Tim to Falls to perform
what will mostly likely become another one of those sets that result in
a sing-a-long of epic proportions.
So there you have it,
six names to kick off the summer season and get you thinking of the
warm days ahead! We have plenty more on the way, so keep your eyes
peeled for our next announcement.
