If we believe everything we see and hear
you would believe that Gabriella
Cilmi is the future of music and her voice has descended
from the Angels.
Sceptical listeners will avoid this album at their peril, however as
much as the marketers have forced Cilmi upon us via all mediums - the
album actually provids some great surprises and reveals an amazing
young Australian artist.
Forget the fact that she is only 16 years old, it is amazing, but
forget it. Opening track Save
the Lies just blows you away, showing a maturity in her
voice that demands your attention, with the additional appeal of the
unbridled youthful enthusiasm of a 16 year old.
This track brings out the soul diva in Cilmi and she doesn’t
miss a thing.
Sweet
About Me is the track that almost everyone will know
(unless you have been living under a rock, the record company
has pushed it that
hard!) it is still as catchy as ever and will continue to receive wide
public acclaim. At times this song seems so sweet it oozes honey,
almost feeling deliberately boppy.
Got No
Place to Go is a track that will follow Sweet About Me as a
major crossover hit, with a catchy chorus and soulful sound. Awkward Game and Safer are a great
pair of ballads, that add something different to the album, showing
what a strength of voice Cilmi has and how it works wonders
when applied it to this style.
"Lessons to be Learned" has already gone Gold and the well played single Sweet About Me
sold enough copies to achieve platinum status. Cilmi is the youngest
solo artist ever to top the Motorola ARIA chart. Sweet About Me held
the number one single position for five consecutive weeks and she is
the first Australian female artist to achieve this in over a decade.
Surely Amarossi would be fuming!!
Many have tried to compare and categorise Cilmi, but at the end of the
day, you just have to let her be herself. It’s also been widely
publicised how young she is, but let’s be straight – she has an amazing
voice whatever her age.
This is a solid album with some great catchy pop tunes. The styling’s
of this album do befit her age and it is the youthful bounce that gives
this album an advantage over other female vocalists. An album that
provides a relaxing soulful feel, mixed in with an upbeat and cheerful
attitude of a very talented Australian.
