A lot has already been said about Australian musician Gotye (aka Wally DeBacker), a music nut of humble beginnings who took the world by storm through both traditional and modern forms of media thanks to his break out hit "Somebody That I Used To Know".
It's a video which has been parodied so many times, it's hard to recall if you've even seen the original or if your memories are simply made up of the interpretations of it by others (a similar feeling one might have with Star Wars or anything else whose iconic status has over taken the idea which spawned it).
However, unlike most who hit such lofty heights of fame, Gotye isn't one to rest on his laurels, or even someone elses laurels... he continues to expand and grow and experiment.
This is never more apparent than when you look at the sorts of videos Gotye releases for his songs, most of which aren't even for commercial use.
For his live shows he commisioned several notable artists and animators to do whatever the hell they wanted, let their interpretation of the songs fill their imagination. The results are as varied as they are glorious.
Below are some of our favourites. Whether it's the animation working the the rythm, or the inventive direction some take to tell the simplest of stories, these are some of the most innovative ideas used in Music Videos we've seen for a long, long time.
It's interesting to see that the bold choices made by Gotye here are also paying dividends.
The songs that, objectively, may be deemed "not as good as others" have been doing fantastic numbers on YouTube thanks largely to the innovative visuals which have been supplied.
Songs include the likes of "Easy Way Out" from Darcy Prendergastm, the phenomenal "Bronte" Directed and animated by Ari Gibson at Mechanical Apple and many, many more.
So the question remains, which is your favourite? Would you like to see more musicians doing this sort of thing? Head over to our Facebook and tell us what your favourite is!
