In
all logic, I'm an owl. Since deferring from uni, I've developed
severely nocturnal sleeping patterns. I usually don't get to bed until
between 6-8am, if I go at all. Provided I have no plans for the
following day, I'll usually pour myself out of the sleeping chambers
around 3-4pm. Which suits me just fine, I like the nightlife, I like to
boogie...(at home, alone, on my computer....wooo!).
ANYWAY. Gotye
+ Mini Orchestra w/ Mountains In The Sky @ The Athaneaum' was a matinee
gig meaning doors were open at 2PM, and your beastly little night-time
friend got up at the CRACK OF NOON for said gig, having only gotten
about four and a half hours sleep. That's just how much I was looking
forward to this show.
The temporary depression of being too poor
for a tshirt (I know! Out of uni AND no money - talk about the road to
success!) having passed, we watched Mountains In The Sky do their
psychedelic electronic thing. And how!
They made the kind of
music that is the aural equivalent of doing that thing with your eyes
where you rub your eyes and you see shapes. Or after you look into a
light then turn the light off and it looks like there are things under
your eyelids.
Gotye
(aka: Wally De Backer, aka: The man of the moment), finally made his
way onto the stage. Call it a generalisation, but who is NOT in love
with this guy? When he thanked the crowd after a song, he was like a
child having been given a bowl of candy. He opened with The Only Way from the hit album "Like Drawing Blood", which is being nationally recognised for pelting the 26 year old into mainstream popularity.
The
mini orchestra, comprising of a 4 piece strings section, did nothing
but add to the beauty of Gotye's already sublime work. Like a crispy
strip dipped in sweet'n'sour sauce - simply making a good thing better!
Must also give credit to some artists who provided amazing visuals for the show such as Dork (who did Gotye's Out Here In The Cold video masterpiece also) and Lucy Dyson. Brilliant.
The day seemed to fly by, with all the fan favourites coming up, like the delicate Heart's A Mess and phone-rage ballad Thanks For Your Time and even performing the ENS remix of his own song Puzzle With A Piece Missing.
But
what made this reviewer stop in her tracks (not literally, it was in a
theatre, not a train, zing, I'm here all week, try the veal) was the
astounding Out Here In The Cold. Boys and girls, I wept like the Virgin Mary (that is to say, just a lil').
I
could've sat in the cramped theatre and listened to that one track over
and over until Wally would get tired of singing to me and go home
(....even my fantasies are disappointing). It also made me think of the
mongoloid that gave the Sydney Road Salvo's their copy of Gotye's
"Boardface" album so I could find it and begin my Gotye obsessive -
fandom. Worked out well for me though!
The bouncy Learnalilgivinanlovin
topped off the afternoon, the great arvo it was, and though bitterly
cold outside, we sang all the way home and reveled in the beautiful
show we had just witnessed. For those of you unacquainted with Gotye, I
recommend (nay, demand) you do so, lest you miss out on a truly
remarkable artist.
PS. If you were the women behind me who
responded to "Wally should come out soon" with "Who's Wally?", I
sincerely hope you rectify this ignorance lest you get a wide slap to
the head.
Overall: 90%
