GrammyAwards 2007

Australia's own rock and roll royalty, Wolfmother, have picked up a prestigious Grammy award for their song, Woman, at the 2007 Grammy Awards held in the US.

Fast becoming the "Next Big Aussie Thing", Wolfmother have quickly replaced Jet as the go-to rock group from down under. The rock trio beat three giants of rock - System Of A Down, Tool and Nine Inch Nails - for the best hard rock performance Grammy.

Other big winners on the night included the Red Hot Chili Peppers who took home three Grammys in the early stages of the night, while Crazy singer Gnarls Barkley grabbed two including one for  Best Alternative Music Album, while leading nominee Mary J Blige took home one.

Blige, who had eight nominations in all, won best R&B song for Be Without You, which was also nominated for record and song of the year. The Dixie Chicks, John Mayer, Justin Timberlake (with rapper T.I. for the song My Love) also won one each.

The Dixie Chicks were the surprise comeback darlings of the year, nominated for a total of five awards for their album, "Taking the Long Way", their first disc since the country backlash over lead singer Natalie Maines' criticism of President George W Bush in 2003.

Other winners included American Idol Carrie Underwood won Best Female Country Vocal Performance, rock pioneer Ike Turner for Best Traditional Blues album (which his son produced) while Bob Dylan took home the award for Best Contemporary Folk/Americana album.

And while Wolfmother waved the flag proudly, it wasn't to be for our other Aussie contenders Keith Urban (who missed out on the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance....and sobriety) and serial Hey Hey It's Saturday guest Tommy Emmanuel who narrowly missed grabbing the Best Country Instrumental Performance award.

Another year, another hyped up Aussie band. Let's hope their follow up album doesn't go the way of "Shine On" - which went down quicker than Paris Hilton at a Hollywood function.
