Joe Cocker still gets a lot of airplay. I know because I’d heard every
song on this album before playing it simply by occasionally listening
to rock channels on a FM radio.
Yes, without doubt, these are all "classic" songs.
The only 'new' version of a song is Joe’s version of Come Together which
appears on the soundtrack to the film Across the Universe.
Come
Together is the most modern sounding song, the
instrumentals sounding more like a Memphis blues version of Nine Inch
Nails’ Closer
than the original Beatles
track.
Joe has made a name for himself, not for his looks, or song writing
ability, but with the rugged guff voice that injects honest emotion
into all of his songs.
Most of Joe’s most famous cover songs (as well as the few songs that
were written specifically for him) make an appearance on the album. A
few of the live versions of songs were chosen over the album
versions, making this album a blend of his greatest hits and what Joe,
himself, considers to be his 'Best Of'.
The collection includes tracks that span the length of Joe’s career.
From 1968’s version of The
Beatles With
a Little Help From My Friends, for which the Beatles
congratulated him for, to modern takes on his old songs from his 90’s
live album.
The tracks chosen also show Joe does have to ability to cover a large
range of different songs. From the comical light-hearted You Can Leave Your Hat On,
the soul and emotion of Up
Where We Belong to the fast paced reggae of Bob Marley’s Could You Be Loved.
Sadly, there are a few omissions from the album however, such as Night Calls and his
cover of Elton John's Sorry
Seems To Be the Hardest Word, which featured on the "Two
Rooms" tribute record.
All things considered, this is a fun and lively collection which is
hard for anyone not
to love. If you can’t name sixteen of Joe Cocker’s songs then you
should buy this album, and if you can - well, it should become part of
your collection no questions asked.
This is Joe Cocker’s sixth 'Greatest Hits' album, but it is the best
and most definitive collection so far.
