Kurt Cobain : About a Son

Review by Sean Lynch

Whether you liked them or not, it's hard to deny the impact that the little garage band from Seattle had on the music industry - and the world itself - even if most of it was a self sourcing media driven prophecy.

And that's what Nirvana, by and large, were. Three guys framed as a mythological giant. And it's for that exact reason that Kurt Cobain : About A Son is nothing short of brilliant.

Kurt Cobain : About A Son

This stunning documentary is Kurt Cobain in his own words. Not taken out of context in a magazine, not edited by MTV, but as it was. The truth coming from the mouth of a normal man who liked to make music.

Taken from 25 hours of previously unheard interviews with Kurt Cobain, About A Son recounts the Nirvana frontman's life as he remembered it. This often eery film reveals an intimate portrait of a well-known (yet largely misunderstood), whose life tragically ended too early (for our own sake or for his - it's still unknown).

Cobain's views on music, art and fame are intimately confided in this stirring documentary, to an awesome soundtrack that plays like Kurt's favourites mixtape.

There is something quite eery about the film, with that sense of a 'Voice From Beyond The Grave' ever present and adds to the emotional weight of the piece. About A Son also uses very little by way of actual images of Kurt himself, but moreso just random shots of his Seattle surroundings.

As odd as it sounds, it actually helps convey the sense of the sort of intimate interview and conversation the film is made up of. It almost seems as if what we are seeing are the exact sorts of images which Kurt himself was daydreamingly looking out at through a kitchen window while coversed about his life to the strangers on the other end of the microphone.

A truly mesmerising, and often relaxing, piece of work which is amazingly poinent without ever feeling instrusive or forced.

A must see for any music fan.

DVD EXTRAS

Not much here, just a theatrical trailer for the film tacked on for the sake of throwing something extra on.

Surely there was some left over raw interview material that could have been used her. There is supposedly over 20 hours of material, fans would have been more than happy to sit through some unedited audio.

I guess the film makers simply wanted Kurt Cobain - About A Son to, literally, speak for itself.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras: 50%
