By Ben Vernel "Incredibad" is the debut album from comedy troupe The Lonely Island. The Lonely Island is comprised of Andy Samberg (star of Hot Rod, SNL, and that great TV pilot Awesometown that did the internet rounds a few years ago) and his friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone (who also write for SNL and made Awesometown with Samberg).
If you have never heard of these dudes - where the hell have you been? How did you even manage to make your way to this review? Alright alright, I will clue you in – their humour is bizarre, unflinchingly crude and immature but also damn funny. And it is aimed directly at Gen Y... Their material holds a mirror up to society, and wins the award for biggest mirror. Is it ironic that I stole that joke from 30 Rock, a show that parodies and reflects (mirror pun alert) the very Saturday Night Live that The Lonely Island now works on? Did your brain just invert itself trying to take in all the weirdness that this paragraph contains?
Anyway, this is a compilation of songs and jokes that TLI have written over their short career to this point. It features some of their past hits (namely Jizz In My Pants and Dick In A Box) but also provides some new laughs. My pick, and indeed the reason I wanted to review this album, is Natalie's Rap featuring the amazing Natalie Portman. Man, is she gangsta. The
rest of the material on this album is, essentially, musical comedy put
to the music of our generation; hip hop, pop, R & B and a bit of
weirdness thrown in for good measure.
The guest cast is sa-weet. Chris Parnell of SNL and 30 Rock fame (Dr. Leo Spaceman), Jack Black, Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), and Natalie Portman, are just the majority, to name most. The quality of the music itself is remarkably high, and the songs are by and large well developed and brilliantly funny.
This is the unashamedly purile college musical comedy album to Flight Of The Conchords' more refined, quirky musical comedy album. Both are definitely worth owning.
