Melbourne Festival Of Choirs
Warms hearts and voices this Queen’s Birthday! While many will be
looking to escape Melbourne’s winter this Queen’s Birthday weekend,
hundreds of singing enthusiasts will be flocking to Melbourne to
participate in the first national Melbourne Festival of Choirs on June
10-13, 2011.
Created by Dr Jonathon Welch AM (best known for his
work as Founding Music Director of the ARIA Logie and Helpmann award
winning Choir of Hard Knocks), Melbourne Festival of Choirs aims to
give all singers, choirs and conductors alike the chance to rehearse,
network and perform in Melbourne's finest venues.
Venues
including the Melbourne Recital Centre, BMW Edge Theatre at Federation
Square and National Gallery of Victoria over the four day Festival
where they have the chance to work with the finest experts.
"I've
attended and presented at many choral Festivals around the world and I
believe that Melbourne now has one of the finest Arts precincts in
Australia to showcase choirs and all our world class musicians" Welch
said.
Melbourne Festival of Choirs 2011 will give all
singers the chance this year to work with the most exciting and
experienced industry leading choral experts that include the
sensational talents of Artistic Director Gordon Hamilton and world
famous The Australian Voices who will be the "choir in residence",
George Torbay (from Battle of the Choirs) and Opera maestro Dr David
Kram.

They will all be bringing their extraordinary knowledge, expertise and
unique teaching styles to make this Festival an unforgettable and
inspiring experience, creating new music, learning new skills and
making new friends in the best venues.
Everyone will have the
chance to join in the fun of "singing around the campfire" with the
legendary Choir of Hard Knocks as part of the "Light in Winter
Festival" at Federation Square at 5pm on Friday June 10 and Saturday
June 11 and there will be public concerts at all three venues with a
free Massed Festival Choir concert at BMW Edge on Mon June 13 at 2.30pm
that will include the World premiere of Ice Blue commissioned
especially for Melbourne Festival of Choirs by Gordon Hamilton, the
sensational “virtual Choir” Youtube composition “Lux Aumurque” by Eric
Whitacre will be conducted by George Torbay, with opportunities for
young singers age 14-25yo to sing in the Festival Youth Choir.

your level of singing experience, this will truly be the best way you
could spend the Queen’s Birthday weekend, have fun and stay warm” said
Dr Welch.
The Festival includes a dedicated Youth/Schools
Festival Program will be held on Friday 10 June which gives students
from Grade 4 upwards the opportunity to collaborate and workshop with
some of Australia's best music directors, and to perform in the BMW
Edge Theatre in Federation Square.
On Sunday 12 June join Dr
Welch at the 2011 Choir Showcase Concerts at the magnificent Melbourne
Recital Centre. There will be two Concerts at 4pm and 8pm in the
Melbourne Recital Centre. The concerts will feature award winning and
diverse choirs from across Australia, world renowned The Australian
Voices with Artistic Director Gordon Hamilton, THECHO!R, Sunbury Divas,
Sevdalinka, SunVOX, gOSs, Rosella Jam, Rodena, plus many more.
