Gig Watch: The Modular Party feat. MSTRKRFT - Brown Alley
By Cara Coretesian Listen to MSTRKRFT Online
What
a party the Modular crew know how to throw. Some of the best DJ crews
from around the globe team up for the biggest, and perhaps most
underrated, dance parties I've ever been to. The latest Modular
party, held at Brown Alley, was easily the most enjoyable night out
with friends I've had in a long long time. There was just so much going
on. From the magnificent set by The Midnight Juggernauts (those of you
who caught them at Parklife recently will know what I'm talking about!)
to the pinnacle of the night MSTRKRFT. For those who are
unfamiliar with their work MSTRKRFT (read as "Masterkraft") is an
electronic music group from East York, Ontario, Canada. The group was
started in 2005 by Jesse F. Keeler (some may remember his work in Death
from Above 1979). Now, while most people will purely take south Park's
word for it - believe me - there is alot more Canadians have to offer
than simply Bryan Adams and Celine Dion. There are some superb DJ's
making their way out of that area, with MK at the forefront of the
assault. The crowd was there for a good time, and for once, it
was a tool free fest. Normally you have to wade your way through a see
of idiots, but thankfully, everyone was in it for a good time. It was
almost funny looking around as there were just patches of friendship
groups - but alot of mixing going on as well. The highlight of the night was of course MSTRKFTS mix of hometown favourites Wolfmother and their track Woman
which was recently taken off their MySpace page thanks to the record
companies getting involved. Heaven forbid they try and cross promote a
good track! A great night - hopefully only one of many more to come.
Set-List: 4 out of 5 Wasn't
much that didn't work on the night. Besides the odd drinks break, it
was one of those nights that just kept you wanting to dance.
Lighting & Visual: 4 out of 5 Some
fantastic visual complimented the night perfectly. A mix of amazing
lighting and some really good screen images and video montages made for
a fun night. The only downside - and anyone who disagrees is a nutbar -
was the endless lines at the toilets. I'm pretty sure I could have
don't my own taxes in the time it took to get into a cubicle.
Overall: 90%
