Hot Pick: Radiohead - ReckonerBy John Wan
All I can say is 'wow'.
This tune from Radiohead is amazing in it's
simplicity and beauty and for someone like myself, who has never really
been a Radiohead fan, has totally changed my view.
Thom Yorke's vocals have a wonderful lilt
and softness that's at once both eerie and utterly absorbing. The percussion is repetitive but far from disjointed, and the simple guitar melodies frame the lyrics like treacle. There's even an instrumental break mid-way through the song that allows Yorke's vocals to take centre stage.
The new Radiohead album "In
Rainbows" hasn't blown me away, but Reckoner is by far
my favourite song at the moment.
I often wonder how gifted an artist one
needs to be to craft something of this calibre? Everyone knows that
Radiohead is a unique band, shown in more ways than just its
creativity; its insistence to release the album digitally and it's
reluctance to tour due to theenvironmental impacts key among them. Perhaps it was fluke
that the band came across this pleasant but powerful ode, but whatever
the case, it needs to be listened to on a regular basis to achieve a
zen-like sensation of tranquility.
The clip is a bit shitty, but ignore that if
you can and just enjoy the sonics. In summary, it's a perfectly executed piece of audio art.
