I
saw White Zombie play at the Horden Pavilion on their ‘Astro Creep’
tour. Great show, but it was so clinically good that more than a few
people in the audience suspected shenanigans were afoot with the band.
This however cannot be said of "Zombie Live", the first ever live
recording from Hollywood’s latest horror movie director (he's
helmed the likes of House
of 1000 Corpses and the much talked about Halloween reboot),
Rob Zombie.
Well produced it may be but it still has the nasty raw edge that makes
a great live album. Having super guitarist, John 5, playing this gig
certainly helped his cause.
In recent times Rob has focussed his energies on his live act and
directing. Thankfully he was still able to release the impressive
"Educated Horses" in 2006.
The set list encompasses Rob’s entire collection, from his days with
White Zombie through to his solo releases - "Hellbilly Deluxe", "The
Sinister Urge" and the aforementioned, "Educated Horses".
The new songs such as American
Witch, Lords
of Salem and The
Devils Rejects sit well alongside his White Zombie era
tunes with More Human
Than Human, Creature
of the Wheel and Thunderkiss
'65 being the standouts from this era
It’s amazing what a good backing band can do for a solo artist (just
ask Ozzy Ozbourne) and here Rob has assembled a fine group to help him
along.
John 5 (David Lee Roth, Marilyn Manson), bassist Piggy D (Wednesday 13)
and drummer Tommy Clufetos (Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper) have been
assembled, almost like a super band, and all of them really bring
Zombie's songs to life.
The production on this hasn’t been polished to perfection, so
it has still retained the type of live sound we all
enjoyed on great live albums such as Slayers "Decade of Aggression" and
Maidens "Live after Death".
Ozzy, bring Rob with you when you tour next - and make us all happy!
