By Ben Vernel

Wolf & Cub's second album "Science And Sorcery" begins with two tracks that demonstrate a fair departure from their earlier work.

Seven Sevens is a light track based around a bossa nova beat and a very simple bassline. It is filled with spacey sound effects and funky guitar.

Have Wolf & Cub gone a little Flaming Lips on us? Unfortunately "Science" isn't catchy enough to be compared to the output of those great American weirdos.

Next song up, What Are They Running, is again a pretty significant departure from their work on "Vessels". It begins as a catchy driving indie rock number but degenerates into an electro percussion freakout.

Most listeners will probably just skip to the next song when this change occurs.

One To The Other is more a return to form, at least in aesthetic. The tone and tempo is a little disjointed and a smidge annoying but overall the song is pretty good.

Master is a five minute long jam session. It isn't particularly ground breaking, and it might be good for a...

Well, it might be good for something... but I didn't find it to be a great listen.

I suppose that sums "Science And Sorcery" as an album; it might appeal to someone, but personally, I didn't find it to be a very enjoyable album.

It's low key, thin, dull music packed to the brim with effects in an effort to distract you from the lack of anything new or interesting in the music itself.

The Loosest Of Gooses is a pretty damn good thumping fuzzy rock song, but the album isn't worth buying for this track alone.

I enjoyed their previous album, "Vessels". "This Mess", "Steal Their Gold" and "Vessels" all showed promise.

Unfortunately that promise has been broken with their latest offering.

RATING: 2 out of 5
