Nintendo
3DS
The latest in hand held gaming is set to launch on
March 31st and is going to revolutionise the way we play games.
Nintendo changed the world of hand held gaming
when it introduced its Nintendo DS with its Touch Screen. Now the
latest from Nintendo is 3D gaming without the need of any daggy glasses.
Much like its predecessor, the Nintendo 3DS™
includes two screens, the bottom screen is a touch screen that can be
used with your fingertips or the stylus that is stored within the unit,
while the top screen displays 3D visuals without the need for special
glasses.
The new system adds real depth to games and
pictures. This feature is also adjustable through the use of the 3D
depth Slider that lets you select the level of 3D to best suit your
eyes and can even be turned off completely for 2D gaming.
Other new features include a circle pad that
provides a full 360 degrees of direction for in game 3D worlds and a
built-in motion and gyro sensor that reacts to motion and tilt of the
system.
In addition, the new Nintendo 3DS comes with six
augmented-reality cards (AR Cards). When the two outer cameras are
pointed at the cards, they read the cards and superimpose images and
animations onto the screen. During our hands-on with the 3DS we were
fighting a dragon boss that seemed to appear up through the table while
the motion and gyro sensors had us dodging projectiles.
There is also a few pre-loaded games, applications
and features such as the 3D camera that allows users to take 3D photos
while also ties in with one of the pre-loaded games called Face
Raiders. Face raiders sees users shooting projectiles at funny
depictions of their own and even their friends faces.
Some of the applications include a pedometer. So
when the system is in sleep mode it earns users Play Coins for
every
step they take, these coins can be used for additional content in
certain games.
The Mii™ Maker application gives users the chance
to create their own avatar or use the camera to take a picture of a
person and have an automatic Mii™ character created for you, Mii
characters can then be uploaded to a Nintendo Wii. Mii characters can
also be imported from the Nintendo Wii onto the 3DS.
The Nintendo eShop will be available to users from
late May and will provide system updates, movies and downloadable
games. Virtual Console games will also be available, offering gamers
classic Game Boy™ and Game Boy Colour™ games.
Also new to the Nintendo 3DS is StreetPass™, this
feature allows players to exchange game information with other Nintendo
3DS systems as owners pass one another throughout the day. Information
like Mii character data, game maps and high scores are among the data
that is shared. The Spotpass feature can connect to public hotspots and
wireless broadband connections.
Owners of previous DS consoles rest assured, the
Nintendo 3DS is backwards compatible with all previous Nintendo DS game
cards with their original 2D graphics. The system also includes an SD
memory card slot and a 2GB SD memory card.
Upon launch there will be over 30 games on offer.
Coming soon titles such as Super Street Fighter IV 3D Editon, Resident
Evil: The Mercenaries 3D Edition and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D will
be released providing for options for mature gamers.
The Nintendo 3DS will go on sale March
31st and retail for AU$349.95*
