DanceStar
Party
By Tristan Tancredi
Do you know what time it is? It's time to get your
groove on.
That's right, the same people that took karaoke to
another level with Singstar have returned with Dancestar Party.
So get your dancing shoes on, invite the friends
over and start moving to the beats.
We say invite your friends over. And we mean it.
Like Singstar, the game desperately requires more than one person in
the room for any fun to be had.
Available exclusively for the PS3, there are
various single player modes available, including; Solo "Dance Now"
routines, Dance Creator, Dance Class and Dance Workout.
Now, some people (those that love to see
themselves on screen and can actually dance) will love the single
player mode, yet we found that the game was only entertaining (for
those of us that couldn't dance) when the room was packed and the
heckling began.
Dance Party mode is perfect for a larger crowd and
caters from between 2-20 people. And from our experience, most people
can't dance, so the more the merrier.
On screen, gamers watch a dancer perform various
dance moves that must be replicated in sync with their PS Move motion
sensor. Fairly straigtforward, until of course you select professional
difficulty.
As the game requires motion sensor technology by
way of the PS Move, you can complete a dance routine (and score well)
just by using the hand holding the dancing "wand".
As we here at Web Wombat are far from John
Travolta when it comes to dance moves, our feet were planted firmly on
the ground with one arm doing all the dancing. But hey, despite
cheating and not playing the game properly, we still scored well.
DanceStar Party contains a selection of 160 dance
routines to master, with four choreographed dances of varying levels
per song. The professional dance routines are choreographed to embody
the moves and energy from each song.
The dancing is a great representation of the music
and (if done properly) is a good workout. The male and female dancers
on screen look good and move like Kevin Bacon in Footloose.
(Who are we kidding? No-one can groove like Kevin Bacon).
Gamers can also connect their Microphones and sing
along to the eclectic selection of tunes available.
LMFAO, Rihanna and Usher are some of the big names
incorporated in Dance Star Party, yet you can also find Basement Jaxx,
Barry White and Billy Joel. So there are songs to suit mum, dad or the
creepy uncle staying for the weekend (That's right, even Lady Gaga has
made the cut).
The Dance Workout component of the game is a great
idea. Tracking the amount of calories lost per day and recording these
in a monthly calendar. It's a great way to get fit, stay motivated and
still have fun.
Dance creation allows you to record a dance
routine and post it online to the DanceStar Party website, Facebook or
Twitter. We didn't have the courage to embarrass ourselves but the
options there for those more confident dancers out there.
With a selection of 40 dance songs there is fun to
be had with DanceStar Party, so long as you play it with mates.
