Transformers:
War for Cybertron
By Jay Williams
Transformers: War for Cybertron is the latest
third-person shooter by High Moon Studios.
Now, I must say that I was a fan of the toys when
growing up - and even though I never really got into the cartoons or
even the latest
movies - it's safe to say I was going into this game with some
pretty high
expectations.
Kicking things off, the game takes place prior
to the Transformers: Prime animated series, when the Transformers still
lived on the fictional machine planet Cybertron. Most of the script is
played out on screen during battle which keeps the fast paced action
moving.
From here the game is split into two distinct
campaigns,
on one side you have the Autobots and the other the Decepticons. The
story of the Decepticons campaign is a prelude to the Autobot
campaign's story. Both campaigns play out in single-player or
cooperative online. There are a total of 12 chapters with each chapter
featuring numerous missions to complete.
Each campaign level features three playable
Transformers. So if you have a couple of mates online get them in on
the action, otherwise you'll have to make do with the game's lousy (and
in most part useless) AI controlled buddies.
The in-game battles are fast paced and action
packed, but you'll have to do some tactical thinking to get ahead.
Players wishing to rush the enemy - think again - because more often
than
not you'll end up having to start from the previous checkpoint.
In addition to the single and cooperative online
mode, there is an online multiplayer verses which offers six modes in
total. The online verses modes offer up an array of maps to choose
from, as well as four different character classes each with each class
equipped with unique weapons and abilities to choose from as you level
up.
As far as gameplay goes, Transformers: War for
Cybertron has a fairly easy learning curve, each Transformer has a main
gun and two abilities. These abilities range from healing, shields and
hovering.
In addition to your abilities and the numerous weapon pick
ups, every character can transform into a vehicle which opens up
another set of weapons - it keeps things interesting to say the least.
Aiming and locking on to your enemies is
relatively easy and the shooting controls feel solid.
Graphic wise, I thought the game could have
delivered more and the characters could have related to the levels more
by adding environment destruction. Another thing that kind of bugged me
was the way your character seems to just float when transformed into
vehicle mode, it made the characters feel weightless.
However, for most part, the game is fast paced and
action packed which left me wanting to pick the game up and play some
more.
Transformers: War for Cybertron is sure to hit the right note for
fans and may even attract some newcomers.
