Mortal Kombat is the latest in the Mortal Kombat
series developed by NetherRealm Studios (formerly known as Midway
Games). This is the ninth installment in the series and the first to be
published exclusively under the Warner Bros. label.
The story is to take place after the events of
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, but during the time of first three games:
Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat 3. However, the
events of the games are said to take place in a different scenario
because Raiden, the god of thunder, has knowledge of the future.
Mortal Kombat is the first M-rated Mortal Kombat
game to be developed for the seventh generation of consoles, though the
second Mortal Kombat for this generation of consoles as opposed to the
T-rated Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. This is also the first title to
include 3D graphics but gameplay solely on the 2D plane (2.5D). The
developers have also stated that this is the first game in which they
are making a conscious effort to create deeper gameplay for more
hardcore players.
