Do you feel the need?
I sure as hell do. It’s not only one of the most successful racing
franchises ever (with over 17 titles in total), but also one of the
most successful gaming franchises ever - and how couldn't it be?
Whether you are racing some hard nosed pro with a rep to keep - or
simply avoiding the cops - Need for Speed has never failed to
entertain.
Enter the newest edition to burn its way onto our screens, Need for
Speed : The Run. EA Black Box has developed NFS : The Run, with the
game taking us into a world of illegal underground and high stakes
racing that is set up as a race from San Francisco to New York, cutting
and weaving through places like Las Vegas and Detroit along the way.
Racing well and winning has never meant much in the past, however this
time around, losing a race could be lethal with gamers lives dependant
on winning. This is made even harder with the most determined and
lethal police pursuit ever seen in any NFS game yet.
Need for Speed : The Run will also be the first to have action set from
out behind the wheel with the main protagonist "Jack" having the
ability to run across rooftops, avoid police and even able to quickly
evacuate badly damaged cars.
The Run will be the first non-shooter game powered by Frostbite 2. What
this means is we will be seeing a whole lot more realism towards the
environment and any destruction that is caused. With this engine being
developed for the Battlefield series, 2011 is turning into the year in
which EA are pulling out all the stops for the newest Need for Speed.
There has been a Need for Speed released almost once a year since 1997,
while impressive as that is, I feel we could be seeing the birth of a
new era of the franchise - with The Run being released for all 7th
Generation Platforms.
The trailer for The Run looks pretty incredible and you can tell that a
narrative will be a driving force for this instalment, something that
has been a little touch-and-go with other releases in the series,
Undercover being one of the few decent stories.
I guess the other perception we can gain from the trailer will be the
insane sense of action that looks like it will maintain for the
entirety of the game and possible sequels. With the Frostbite 2
powering The Run, the graphics and visuals look far ahead of any of its
predecessors.
Something that has always made the franchise stand out from the slew of
copycats are the vehicles. The Run is no exception, with cars ranging
from Volkswagen Scirocco R to the McLaren MP4-12C, with blistering
speeds over 300 km per hour. Some of the cars, like the Lamborghini
Aventador, will only being available in the Need for Speed : The Run
Limited Edition.
If you like racing games and enjoy a good action packed story NFS : The
Run will be one to keep and eye out for. With a November 17 release
date scheduled this one will be driving off the shelves.
