A Survivor is born.
Every gamer would know of her, most gamers would have controlled her at
one point or another, most fifteen year old boys have had
"Un-Christian-like thoughts" about her. Yes, it's true, the franchise
that has given
the world some of the best game titles across various platforms ever is
about to bring Lara Croft back.
Slated for a third quarter release in 2012 "Tomb Raider" will be a
complete re-boot and not linked with the original nine other titles.
This, as most things are these days, will be an origins story.
With Lara just finishing at an Academy, at the age of 21 she sets off
on a salvage ship towards an island near Japan, hunting for relics and
other artifacts. That is until fate steps in, arriving in the form of
an unforeseeable storm that rips the ship in two and strands Lara on an
island, Isolated and without food or water, and worse still, without
weapons.
Thus the tag line: "A Survivor is born".
The game will be the first installment of a proposed trilogy and will
set the tone for who Lara will need to become to not only evolve into
the Tomb Raider - but actually survive the trials and tests
that come with it.
In terms of difference in game play compared to the previous titles,
the sense we are given here is one of challenge. The new series will be
a more difficult and skill based game with things like ledge jumping
made far more difficult than in previous titles without the auto grab
ability available to users.
Weapons will need to be found and created by combining items you find
on your travels and the shooting will be less "auto lock on" and more
"manual aim". This Tomb Raider has been given a higher focus on combat
and confrontation, as you will need to use everything you possess and
can learn to survive.
Unlike previous titles where you have a training level at the start,
almost like a refresher course, the latest game will feature a skills
system. You wont be able to travel to certain parts of the island until
you learn the required skills. I'm really looking forward to seeing how
this works as it will almost dictate the pace of the game, which won't
necessarily be a bad thing.
One aspect I am happy they have kept is the puzzles and trials. The
need to think during the game and solve tasks to advance was always
feature I both loved and hated during games. As frustrating as it can
sometimes be, if you take it away you are kind of left with a first
person shooter.
Come late 2012 Lara Croft will be back and by the look of the first
full trailer, she will be Awesome.
