Anitra Metzler is an upcoming jewellery designer whose label - named
after the
designer - launched this year and was showcased in The Gallery at
Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.
This simple yet classy jewellery line aims to bring something new to the high
end Australian fashion scene with handmade pieces that are inspired by natural
beauty. Though the jewellery comes with a hefty price tag, the designs set
themselves apart from other jewellery labels by using only natural precious and
semi-precious stones paired with pure 14 carat gold and 925 silver.
Currently studying a Bachelor of Art History and Theory at the College of
Fine Arts at UNSW, Metzler has always wanted to be a designer of some
sort. It wasn't until she turned 18 that she realised jewellery design was where
her true passion lay and has been obsessed ever since. She says, "I
love designing and I love jewellery, so I know I'm doing exactly what I want to
be doing."
Metzler takes inspiration for her designs from the intricacies in her
surroundings, such as small patterns you don't notice unless you take a closer
look, "A lot of the time these patterns are in nature but I've also taken
inspiration from Moroccan and Indian architecture", she declares. For Metzler,
the precious and semi-precious stones used in her jewellery are a big part of
the design process and sometimes the inspiration for a piece comes entirely from
the stone - "I always work around a theme or mood for each collection. I
had the concept of Last Light in my mind before I'd finalised a single
design", she said.
Last Light is inspired by the ambiance of a summer twilight sky, and
pieces that are influenced by Moroccan and Indian interior. The collection
includes rose quartz, rough amethyst, orange moonstones, star rubies and rough
diamonds. A standout piece in this range is a pure 14 carat gold, long chain
Moroccan inspired necklace, called Desert Nights.
Choosing just one piece as a favourite would be a hard decision for any
jewellery designer; it's almost like choosing a favourite child [almost]. When
asked to choose her favourites, Metzler responded that every single piece
has a memory of the design process attached to it -
"From the Last Light collection I love the Rose Quartz Cuff,
it's such a statement piece and it really embodies the theme of my
collection. My favourite piece from Intricacy is the Solar Quartz Ring,
I never take it off. But, I also really love the Shape It Takes
aquamarine bangle. The stone was cut to a hexagon to mirror the shape of the
crystal formation.", she enthused.
Our writer indicated her favourite pieces in the Last Light collection would have
to be the FREYA rough amethyst silver cuff, the SNAKE gold
plated snake arm band with orange tourmaline stones [very Egyptian princess] and
the SUNSTONE, a three piece sunstone necklace.
Intricacy uses aqua-marine, kyanite, amethyst, rough and solar
quartz, to reflect patterns created in nature, the ocean and crystal formations.
These were the foundations that inspired the range. The range
consists of individual silver bangles with large ocean blue and sapphire
coloured stones, Indian inspired bangles adorned with amethysts and crystals, a
crystal embellished snake ring, and [a favourite] a stunning statement, forearm
gold cuff.
Metzler hopes to see the label well established within the next five years
and selected pieces from the Last Light collection have already
appeared in a look book for clothing label Shilha.
"I've been working for four years to get where I am now but only recently
felt I was in the position to successfully launch the label. I really want
to keep travelling and take inspiration for new collections from the places I
visit", Metzler stated.
