David Beckham
By Ines Mendoza
For
those of us with about as much sporting knowledge as Robin Williams has
arm hair - David Beckham is pretty much the top of the list when it
comes to stars.
For those of us who have about as much sporting
knowledge as Nicole Ritchie has brains - David Beckham is still pretty
much on the top of the list. Let's face it, Mr. Posh Spice is sizzling! Born
on the 2nd of May 1975, David Robert Joseph Beckham, is without doubt
English
footballs' greatest export. From his dashing ability on the soccer
pitch, to his dashing good looks off the field - there is little that
people don't
know about him. Beckham's career began when he signed a
professional contract with Manchester United - arguably the most famous sporting team in the world - making his first
first-team appearance in 1992, at the age of just 17. But, what many
may not know is that his 1992 debut wasn't his first appearance on
field. In fact, six years earlier he was Manchester United's mascot for
a match against West Ham United in 1986. Whether he was kicked
repeatedly in the groin by minors (as they all are) remains a mystery
to this day... While with Manchester United he played a key role
in their dominance of the FA Premier League in the 1990s and early
2000s, and Beckham was pivotal in the team accomplishing 'The Treble' of the League, FA Cup,
and UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left the club to become only the
third Englishman to sign for Real Madrid in 2003, after Laurie
Cunningham and Steve McManaman. In January of 2007, Beckham
announced he was to leave Real Madrid (his wife, Posh, doesn't like Spanish food) to join the American League team
- Los Angeles Galaxy - on a 5 year deal that would see Beckham earn up
to $10 million a year in direct salary, but with endorsements and
profit-sharing Beckham could earn up to $50 million a year and earning
about 90 dollars every second on the field.
If we compare that to my
current salary...it's a f*** load of money.
Most
recently Becks made an astonishingly hyped trip to Australia for a
"Friendly" against Sydney F.C. which saw the Galaxy lose 5-3. Of
course, Beckham kicked a blinder! However, Beckham is
just as well known for his off field exploits as on - for no better
reason than the fact that he is married to former Spice Girl and full
time skinny cow, Victoria. The Beckhams (universally as "Posh and
Becks") have three sons: Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz. It was rumoured that
the children were named after the cities they were conceived in
(luckily, Beckham is an Englishman and never travelled to Lahore much). So,
for now, the gorgeous Becks is off limits to the swag of gals willing
to throw themselves at him (although, if the tabloids are anything to
go by - and if you're named Rebecca Loos, you might have a better chance
than others). And while he may not have left Manchester United on the
friendliest of terms, you'll be hard pressed to find a soccer fan who
doesn't believe that David Beckham is the rightful King of England.
