Michelle Behennah
By Ines Mendoza
I
must admit I'm not one to shy away from the fruits of beauty that
England has bestowed upon us. No, I'm not talking about Fergie,
Charles or any other in-bred buck-toothed Royal - I'm talking about my
own royalty. Jude, Hugh, Becks - the kings of England as far as I'm
concerned.
But who is their Queen, I hear you murmur under your breath? I give you Michelle Behennah.
Born
a bookworm in 1977 in Singapore, Michelle originally wanted to go
to medical school, as all potential supermodels do, and become a
plastic surgeon (however I know every time I'm in for neurosurgery, I
make certain to politely ask for scalpel-in-hand Naomi Campbell to
move aside and request Dr. House).
Thankfully her mother,
Rosemary, relocated Michelle and her three siblings to Sheffield,
England, in the early '90s, soon after which she was ushered into
a competition for a shampoo company, and not surprisingly, she left
victorious.
By the time 1993 had rolled around, she entered
the Ford Agency "Supermodel of the World" competition. It wouldn't take
Nostradamus work out that Michelle would end up in the final three,
along with fellow model Magdalena Wrobel. In
actual fact, I'm pretty sure Nostradamus did predict the win in chapter
three of his hit book "Supermodels, I'll give you
Supermodels!". That may not be 99% accurate, however Michelle's
win nevertheless moved her on to bigger and better things.
Paris
(the city) beckoned, and Behennah embarked on a seven-year journey
trying to establish her name within the cut throat modeling
world. And did she do it in style...! Yes...she did. From
Elle to Glamour and Vogue to my lovely Spanish edition of Mademoiselle
and Cosmo, the model appealed to all the major glossy mags.
Not
content with photography, she took on the big guns - walking down
runways for designers Cynthia Rowley, Valentino, BCBG, Donna Karan,
Emanuel Ungaro, Nina Ricci, Ralph Lauren, Salvatore Ferragamo, Chanel,
and Thierry Mugler. An amazing feat for a supermodel whose
preferred foods include fish and chips, baked beans, mushy peas, curry
sauce, and - oh my! - chocolate Gummy Bears.
Last time I
checked, Supermodels dietary intake consisted of lettuce leaves and a
healthy serve of Charlie Horse - so kudos on such an array of preferred
delicacies.
By 1999, Michelle had made her way to the Big Apple
- not to be confused with the Big Pineapple found in Queensland - where
her career has really taken off. Since moving to New York, Michelle has
appeared in numerous high-profile advertisements for Burberry, Esprit,
Givenchy, Vanderbilt Jeans, Hewlett Packard, J. Crew, Kenzo,
L'Oréal "Elnett" hairspray, Mango, Nina Ricci, Saks Fifth
Avenue, Swatch watches, and Tommy Hilfiger. Suffice it to say, she has
one hot bod!
With her alluring green eyes, Michelle most
memorably modeled swimsuits (as if anyone notices those) for Sports
Illustrated's infamous Swimsuit Issues, in 1999, 2000 and 2001
(Sara Templeton was busy those years, apparently) the latter in which
she practically steals the spotlight from Elsa Benitez and Molly Sims,
a hard feat to achieve. However, her most impressive achievement would
her addition to the Victoria's Secret Modeling Catalogue, which is the
Superbowl for aspiring models, while her continuing rankings in
Maxims Top 100 hottest Women indicate that her mainstream appeal is
just as impressive as her status in haute couture circles.
So,
what now for this stunning blonde beauty - who makes Jude Law look
yesterday's lamb Souvalaki? Well, she's done what any girl with a pair
of breasts and a half-impressive face would do and has moved onto
television, appearing on MTV for the network's programmes Model
Search and Fashionably Loud. She also hosted a Top 10 Music Show on VH1
and has appeared on Access Hollywood.
During her appearance on
Access Hollywood, she was asked her thoughts on the idea of models
dating to which she responded 'I think it's weird for two models to go
out together because models can be quite vain -- who would be in the
bathroom? You know, I think it would be like a fight.' Which
confirms my belief as to why not choosing Medicine as a career was the
right option.
Her next desired foray is into the world of the
moving picture - films - which all the youngsters seem to rave
about these days. Will she succeed in her endeavour to be the most
beautiful woman on the silver screen, eclipsing the likes of Keira
Knightley? Sadly the future remains a mystery, and probably always will
be... And besides, I haven't read up to that chapter in Nostradamus'
brilliant tome "Supermodels, I'll give You Supermodels!" yet...
