Tatiana de los Rios
By Sara Templeton
Is
there a Colombian revolution about to happen? Well, perhaps,
but how about a Colombian 'celebrity' revolution?
Shakira has helped put the South American country on the
pop-culture map, and Tatiana, a relative newcomer, looks like
shaking things up even further...
Tatiana de los Rios is a Colombian native, and also a Leo.
In the mid-90s, most people outside of South America probably
wouldn't have heard of her, but, like so many top models today,
she had a her first 15 minutes and it was the perfect big
break.
In 1998 she managed to score a contract for a photo spread
and appear on the cover of Shock magazine, which is basically
a men's magazine in the vein of Ralph and FHM.
Furthermore, the edition of Shock magazine she appeared in
just happened to be an anniversary edition - subsequently
selling out after just one week.
After this one magazine stint, her face was much more recognisable
and the offers came flooding in from other men's magazines
to do shoots.
Even Sony Music signed her on for some publicity shots, such
was her mainstream debut.
Following
her Sony Music contract, she started doing self-promotional
tours, and her popularity boomed.
In fact, she was even voted as Colombia's Personality of
the Year, alongside the country's president.
Now there's a way to spruce up politics and no mistake!
She released her own calendar and started getting more and
more cat-walks for various fashion labels in the late 90s.
She was also voted as Aló's (another magazine) most
popular woman for two year running (1999-2000).
Tatiana then scored contracts with the likes of BP, Costeña
Beer, Trident and Johnson & Johnson, soon becoming a house-hold
name in Colombia.
Today, Tatiana is steadily breaking into the mainstream markets
of North America and Europe, and all signs point to a successful
career. Many are even saying she has a Heidi Klum-ish look,
which is quite the plaudit.
Perhaps she'll be the next Ambrosio or Bündchen, and
her efforts thus far have already created a big interest in
the country of Colombia - which something to be proud of.
And who knows, maybe even a singing career is on the cards?
Move over Jay-Lo, de los Rios is in town.
