By Ines Mendoza We all
have teenage crushes, some come in the form of a popstar, some in the
form of boybands posters on your wall, some in the form a teacher at
school. However, my first and only lesbian crush would have to be the
most special.
It was a cold dreary night in 2001, I was at the
cinemas on a date that wasn't going particularly well, and then like a
Goddess from the sky appeared Shannyn Sossamon in a flowing ye olde
skirt. Here eyes cutting through the screen, her cheeky smile making my
heart melt. She is the woman that make men swoon and girls weak at the
knees - a rare talent indeed!
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii (being
of Dutch, English, Irish, German, French, Filipino, and Hawaiian
descent also explains that unique and stunning look), Sossamon is the
daughter of a nurse and grew up in Reno, Nevada where she attended
Galena High School. Noticing her rare talent, the day after
her high school graduation Shannyn moved to LA to pursue a career in
dance. It wasn't long after moving to the City of Angels, Sossamon
began to work as a DJ, booking gigs in local clubs.
While we
know her now as a sexy actress, Sossamon actually began her career as a
model for various companies including Sassy Magazine, Unionbay
Clothing, American Eagle Outfitters, and Planned Parenthood. She
also appeared in two television commercials for Gap and starred in
music videos for artists such as Daft Punk, The Goo Goo Dolls, Cher,
Mick Jagger, DJ Quik, and Korn.
By 1997 Shannyn appeared as a
fashion model, a girl and a trophy presenter in several episodes of the
classic cult comedy Mr. Show and ultimately in 1999 discovered by
casting director Francine Maisler, while assisting a fellow DJ at
Gwyneth Paltrow's brother's birthday party.
However, it's
the lead female role (a role which she beat Kate Hudson for) in the
2001 film A Knight's Tale opposite Heath Ledger which really
brought Shannyn into the limelight and imortalised her
beauty. The film received mixed reviews but earned the
actress a Young Hollywood Award for Breakthrough Female Performance as
well as two Teen Choice Awards nominations and four MTV Movie Awards
nominations, including "Best Breakthrough Performance".
If
hearts weren't a flutter for Shannyn Sossamon after that adventure, it
was the 2002 comedy 40 Days and 40 Nights (alongside then teen
heartthrob Josh Hartnett) which shot her into the stratosphere. Again,
Sossamon was nominated for Teen Choice Award for "Choice Film
Chemistry", which was shared with co-star Hartnett.
It was in
the same year Sossamon took on a lead role in Roger Avary's The Rules
of Attraction, an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis book. Yet another
sexy string to her sexy bow.
However, things took a bit of a
turn for the forgettable after that, reteaming with Heath Ledger in the
long forgotten supernatural thriller The Order, which ultimately led to
the decsion to become pregnant take a short break from acting.
Her
return to acting from 2004 was sporadic. From guest starring in Law
& Order: Special Victims Unit, to direct-to-video low-budget horror
film Devour, as well as small roles in the films Undiscovered, Kiss
Kiss Bang Bang and The Holiday - nothing quite stood out as much as her
earlier success.
From 2006 Sossamon featured in a series of
productions including the independent film Wristcutters : A Love Story,
Courteney Cox's short lived drama Dirt and a regular role on
vampire drama Moonlight.
The success of TV kickstarted things
once more popping up as the lead female in a remake of the Japanese
horror film One Missed Call. This also spelt a return to the Teen
Choice Awards earning a nomination for "Choice Film Actress: Horror".
Most recently she has found success on the HBO TV show How to Make It in America, in which she plays the character of Gingy Wu.
But
let's get to what's really impressive! Those looks! Sossamon has two
tattoos, including an S with a flower on her right back shoulder
standing for Sherry, her mother's name. She also has a small tattoo on
her left wrist that says "Heart". She also continues to study acting,
music and dance and was the original drummer in the Los Angeles
psychedelic band Warpaint, with her sister Jenny Lindberg.
Still
without equal when it comes to beauty, we can only hope we continue to
see more and more from Shannyn Sossamon - the girl that got away!
