Veronica Varekova
By Ines Mendoza
Today's top models can be whatever they like - singers, actors,
painters, even DJs and writers. But more often that not, top
models these days are out to prove a point - one that has
been pretty much etched in stone by critics of the glamorous
fashion industry: that all models have forsaken brains in
favour of beauty.
Veronica Varekova is one of the world's most beautiful models,
but at the same token she can put the above point to rest.
Indeed, many would be interested to know that the top model
is fluent in three languages (trilingual for the academics)
and has a degree in psychology. This is one babe you don't
want to have an arguament about Sigmund Freud with.
Varekova was born in the Czech Republic in June, 1977, though
it should be noted that back then her homeland comprised of
Slovakia too - called Czechoslovakia. Anyway, to cut a long
story short, Varekova started a modeling career in the year
of 1996 and has since come a long, long way.
At 5' 10-inches, Varekova is an imposing figure by anyones
measure, and has worked on a number of advertising campaigns
to boot. For starters, she was the face of Pantene (hair care)
in a number of countries, has worked for Guess?, was the spokesmodel
for Nivea and has completed campaigns for Coco Chanel. She's
also worked for Charles David, Emanual Ungaro and male America's
favourite catalogue, Victoria's Secret.
She even appeared on the cover of the Australian edition
of Marie Claire in the month of May, in 1999. Other magazine
appearances include Cosmopolitan, GQ, plus Harper & Queen.
But more importantly to the most lucrative market in the world,
that being the USA, she has now appeared in her fourth Sports
Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, meaing she could be heading for
the front cover if she returns for the shoot in 2003.
All this at the age of 24? - not bad at all. But what's next
for the Czech model? Probably not a career in psychology just
yet, as the pay isn't as good as in fashion. But you never
know - we may be calling the ironic faux pas the Varekova
Slip in future...
