Natalie Wakeling
By SARA TEMPLETON
It's
not often we get requests at Web Wombat Fashion to profile
specific models, but we've had numerous inquiries about Aussie
model Natalie Wakeling.
Easily swayed by the voices of our loyal readers, we decided
to take up this crusade, and the fact that she's a plus size
model was quite intriguing too.
The term 'plus size' model doesn't fit well with this writer
- I prefer to think of her as any other top model. In fact,
the blonde bombshell has even been featured in the hallowed
pages of Cosmopolitan magazine - in a full six page spread,
no less.
Born Natalie Anne Wakeling on February 11th, 1980, she is
a brilliant example of how successful a model can be without
adhering to the mainstream notion of a beautiful person -
that is, someone with a waif-like figure.
In society today, the focus on body image and being beautiful
is so strong that it often tears people apart.
The fact that Natalie is a well-respected and popular model
on both a local scale in Australia and in places like New
York suggests that perceptions may be beginning to change.
Natalie, a Mudgee, NSW native, is also an ambassador for
the Eating
Disorders Foundation of NSW, where her website quotes:
"She will continue to strive for the acceptance of all
body types in the media and Fashion."
In 1998, at the age of 18, Natalie signed a contract with
Big Gals Models, soon after which her Cosmopolitan feature
appeared. Her next magazine appearance was in a shoot for
U.S Glamour, and soon after she was in high demand.
Natalie, standing an imposing 5'9" tall, has since appeared
in magazines such as She, Woman's Day, New Idea, Cleo and
has features in advertising campaigns for fashion labels including
Katies1626, BiB, Table Eight and Rockmans.
And if you thought that was impressive, Natalie has worked
with Elite model in Miami, according to her website, where
she flew to Florida for a season of work and also scored her
first front cover.
She has even been to New York recently, where she signed
with Ford Model Management, which is an internationally recognised
agency, who also represent models such as Christie Brinkley,
Lizzy Jagger and Rachel Hunter.
