Meerea Park Terracotta Shiraz 2002
With Paul Ippolito
One of the shining lights to come out of the Hunter in recent
times is Meerea Park. A commitment to perfection by winemaker
Rhys Eather makes this a winery and the wines emanating from
it ones to watch.
Occasionally you have to spoil yourself with some top shelf
wine. Yes, there is some expectation created when you go and
spend nearly $55 on a bottle of wine but in this case, I believe
your senses, and particularly your palate, is amply rewarded.
A magnificent deep crimson purple colour. The nose is packed
with rich powerful liqueur fruit aroma. Intensely concentrated.
Complexity exhibiting stewed berry fruits. Some leathery notes
and a restrained subtle earthiness.
The palate rewards with smooth velvety seamless berry fruit.
The fruit flavours linger with an extraordinary length and
are aligned with fine soft tannins. Rich and elegant, entirely
fruit driven. The splash of Viognier just completes this wine
and gives it elegancy. Sweet powerful oak exudes, well integrated
and balanced.
Drinking very well right now with a lamb, spinach and potato
stew, but will cellar and improve with at least 10+ years
under its belt. Hunter classic material in the making.
The Hunter's future is in safe hands with access to fruit
like this and the likes of the winemaking here. An outstanding
wine that does actually represent value for money. Go on,
spoil yourself!

General Features of Shiraz are:
The taste/aroma is predominantly pepper - very floral, black-pepper,
with blackberry and plums.
The cooler climates add a chocolatey taste and fragrance.
When young, it is a tempting, fruity experience. But it is
flexible enough to be cellared for 25 years and mature into
a lovely mellow drop.
Perfect to enjoy with red meat, white meat, and pizza/pasta
dishes.
