Mandala Shiraz 2010 & Rymill Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Rymill Cab Sauv 2010
Hand-picking selected fruit from a low-yielding but excellent vintage in
Victoria's Yarra Valley in 2010 enabled Mandala Wines' Charles Smedley to create
a genuinely memorable 2010 Mandala Shiraz.
"2010 was outstanding with warm to mild conditions and low Spring rainfall,"
Charles says, "which allowed for a long and gentle growing season with steady,
warm temperatures when we hand-picked in March.
"And being a smaller producer we had greater control over our fruit, and were
able to select only the best parcels - in the case of our 2010 Shiraz capturing
something of the individual characteristics of this excellent vintage."
This is a drop with typically savoury and spicy Shiraz on a rich palate,
together with well-integrated wood from 18 months on French oak. Pay $28 and
team it with a lamb-based Shepherd's Pie.
One For Lunch:
South Australia's Coonawarra also enjoyed an excellent vintage in 2010, with
Rymill lauding it "one of the best Cabernet vintages on record" and their
resultant 2010 Rymill Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon "one of our finest Cabernets
yet."
High praise, but worthy of it as this is a full-bodied and richly flavoured wine
with intense and concentrated fruit flavours, coupled with cedar box, rich
chocolate and refined tannins.
At $33.50 it's a steak-lover's delight to enjoy now or to put aside for a few
years to develop even more beautifully.
