Logan Chardonnay 2011 & Amberley Estate Merlot 2011

Amberley Estate Merlot 2011

Amberley Estate
Merlot 2011

It's unlike a winemaker from Orange, located in the central west of NSW, to suggest not to drink his Chardonnay 2011 vintage. But Peter Logan suggests just this.

What he suggests rather, is to lay down the vintage in your cellar as an investment. As the years roll into decades you will be able to watch that investment grow. "In two years", he predicts "this 2011 will open nicely to reveal savoury spicy and nutty aromas vying for attention with the primary fruit,". "In 10 years you'll find a wonderfully textured wine with a complex mix of spices, nuts, dried fruits and citrus peel and a long finish ...". In the longer term, he believes it will continue you develop to, at least, 2027 and beyond.

He is not "talking through his hat": Logan Wines' are currently one of the longer-running Chardonnay makers in the Orange region, having made their premier Chardonnay vintage in the late 90's. Peter is considered an authority on what to expect from laying cold-climate types of this variety down in the cellar.

If the temptation is too strong to put one or two bottles or even a couple of cases away at the price, "pop the cork" now and savour the cashew, orange rind and pear aromas, delectable grapefruit and white peach flavours, and its beautifully long mineral finish. Best imbibed with creamy seafood dishes. Top value at $25.

A Lunchtime Tipple:

Amberley Estate obtains its fruit from across Western Australia for its Merlot as the popularity of this Western Australian varietal continues to increase. This excitingly vibrant 2011 Merlot is well worth considering.

Winemaker Lance Parkin has extracted the best of the fruit, with this wine having plenty of the juicy raspberry and rich ripe plum flavours and firm tannins expected in a typical Merlot . It's a wine to combine with game dishes or venison, or to enjoy with a good BBQ cooked scotch fillet or sirloin. Expect to pay $18.99.
