New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011 & Leasingham Winery Tempranillo 2009
Leasingham Winery Tempranillo 2009
The Independent Liquor Retailers group has just launched onto the market its
own private label selection of wines with the catchy label - The Owl & The
Pussycat. They see the market segment for this label being those who are looking
for a quality wine at a reasonable price. Priced at between $10 to $15 the
label should be easy to find at one of the Groups 250 stores across
Australia.
Their first cabs off the rank are a New Zealand 2011 Marlborough Sauvignon
Blanc and a 2011 Barossa Shiraz. The Sauvignon Blanc is an outstanding drop
priced at $13.99 and the fruit was grown in the Awatere region, Marlborough.
The wine has a distinctive mineral cum flinty character and the naturally
occurring acidity of the region is evident on the tongue. There is also a
underlying tropical fruit flavour of passionfruit and charming lime/lemon.
The Independent Liquor Retailers group have indicated they have a Cabernet
Sauvignon and a Sparkling planned for future release.
You'll certainly enjoy this Sauvignon Blanc with a pasta smothered in a
creamy tomato and garlic sauce or, to head East, you'll find it goes exceedingly
well with spicy Thai food.
A Glass For Lunch:
Tim Adams and wife Pam from the Clare Valley's Leasingham Winery have just
released a 2009 Tempranillo. The wine is labelled as Mr Mick, named in honour
of the late Mick Knappstein. Knappstein made wines at Leasingham for over 50
years.
Until relatively recently Tempranillo was just about unknown in the district,
that is until Tim and Pam discovered how suitable a location it is to grow the
grape. This one is a full bodied yet easy on the palate red with the flavour of
strawberries, smooth tannins and a wonderful undercurrent of spice.
Priced at only $15 it is easier on the wallet that other locally produced
Tempranillos. Drink it with just about any cuisine and certainly worth
considering for your Christmas day lunch if your planning on the traditional
roast turkey.
