Serafino Sharktooth Shiraz 2009 & Richland Pinot Grigio 2012
Serafino Sharktooth Shiraz 2009
If you have won a Jimmy Watson Trophy and you've also produced wine in Italy,
France, the United States and also Australia it really means something when you
describe the grapes from a certain vineyard as being "the kind of thing
winemakers dream about."
That is exactly how Charles Wish from the McLaren Vale's Sharktooth Block
vineyard summed up the fruit that went into its leading Sharktooth Shiraz. Wish
said that when he started with Serafino in 2009 he was completely taken by is
distinctive fruit from that block. He said, "It definitely was the kind we
winemakers dream about."
For those who know their Shiraz the Serafino Sharktooth Shiraz 2009, with its
deep purple colouring, full bodied palate and its ardent, rich and beautiful
flavours of dark berry fruit, is truly quite good.
While not inexpensive at $70, it is most surely a rewarding drop for that
special occasion. Combine with a good flame-grilled fillet of beef or just drink
it on its own.
A Glass For Lunch:
The Pinot Grigio from the Richland label has certainly been one of our
favourites for some time. This excellent wine is produced in Westend Estate at
Griffith in the NSW Riverina by Bill Calabria.
His most recent from the 2012 vintage is on par with the best of what we have
come to expect from previous vintages. This vintage, from excellent fruit and
applied wine making expertise, has a pungency with lemon and ripe pear aromas. It
has a palate that's strong and full bodied and sharp apple, spic fruit and
lychee flavours.
This is an excellent value wine coming in at $10.95 and can be enjoyed with a
wide range of foods from Asian Pad Thai and noodle dishes to platters of Italian
antipasto.
