Rutherglen Durif Wines & Yellowglen Exceptional Vintage XV 2002
Yellowglen Exceptional Vintage XV 2002
In spite of the numerous bodies that exist to market and promote their
industry, those people who make wine are a very individualistic and independent
lot. Interestingly there is a group in the Rutherglen region of Victoria who
have been working together successfully to promote neither their industry nor
their region, just the sole wine all of them make, called Durif.
They are very quick to highlight the fact that they have been promoting Durif
since about the first planting of the vines at Rutherglen in 1908 by the
ancestors of the families behind the labels today, the labels being: Campbells,
Scion Vineyard, All Saints, Morris, Cofield, Bullers, Stanton & Killeen and
Rutherglen Estates. They are looking to develop the Durif wine style and iconic
red wine in Australia.
Colin Campbell, Chairman of the Durif of Rutherglen Network, has said, "And
at the same time they've also been able to further develop their own unique
house styles through exploring new wine making and viticultural practices,",
further adding, "And then about ten years ago we went a step further by
putting in place the Network to enhance the profile of Durif amongst red wine
lovers, and to win over new followers."
"We've done events around member sommelier and trade tastings, cellar doors and
public information campaigns ... we must be having some impact, because more
Durif is appearing on restaurant wine lists, in bottle shops, and more
importantly, on the homes and dinner tables around Australia," he says.

The Christmas, New Year and Australia Day may now be just a memory, but that
is no reason to cease drinking sparkling wines: as Sir Winston Churchill once so
famously said of it: "In success you deserve it, in defeat you need it."
There have been two releases of the exceptional traditional method sparklings
from Yellowglen for those very special celebratory occasions in 2013. One an
Exceptional Vintage XV 2002 and the other a Exceptional Vintage XV 2004. Both
of them made from grapes sourced from the Yellowglen Hargrave Vineyard in
Piccadilly Valley located in the Adelaide Hills.
It was just the best bunches of grapes that were selected and then the wine
left to mature for up to 10 years for the best results. This has resulted in a
delicate bead with a lingering finish and a complex rich palate. Making for very
good value at $49.99.
