Austin's Barrabool Reserve Pinot Noir 2002
With Paul Ippolito
This Geelong, Victoria winemaker has produced this stunning
Pinot Noir. What you get is a gorgeous garnet red colour with
violet tints. A powerful complex savoury style of Pinot Noir
that is drinking exceedingly well right now.
The aromas evoke ripe cherry, strawberry and plum fruits
with some spiciness and a light smoky hint. Whilst quite potent
on the palate, it displays an intricacy of multiple layers
of fruit flavours, particularly ripe cherries that are well
integrated with the French oak treatment.
There are also some earthy, forest floor, truffle and cigar
box complexities emanating from nose to palate.
Would go perfectly with marinated quail or roasted duck salad.
Priced well at around $45 and should cellar for at least
5 years plus, developing further mature characters. Overall
one seriously good Pinot Noir.

General features of Pinot Noir:
The taste/aroma is predominantly cherry/plummy - red cherry
and black cherry, with berry elements, including strawberry
and raspberry, and a hint of plum. The aroma can sometimes
be even prunish.
Cellaring? If you wish. But, really, it is meant to be consumed
while young.
Perfect to enjoy with lighter meats such as goose and duck,
and gamey meats such as rabbit. It goes superbly with Italian
dishes.
