Wine Review: Dowie Doole Merlot 2003

With Paul Ippolito

Dowie Doole Merlot 2003A quality McLaren Vale South Australian wine producer with a very good winemaker in Brian Light. Smart classy packaging reflecting its contents.

Vintage conditions provided perfect ripening conditions demonstrated through concentrated flavour, excellent varietal characters and intense colours. Deep vibrant red in colour with crimson hues.

Aromas of rich jammy plums, stewed cherries and blackcurrant. Bouquet of chocolate and sweet oak. The palate is all about ripe fruit - specifically plum and blackcurrant.

Lovely soft tannin structure delivering an approachable wine given its relative infancy. A well balanced wine with a persistent fruit driven length. Seamless, medium bodied with well integrated oak due to barrel fermentation.

Should cellar 2-4 years and will be interesting to see how this develops. Would go well with finely cut marinated bbq steak or else steak and kidney pie. Competitively priced at around $21.

Typical features of Merlot are:

  • The taste/aroma is predominantly fruity and peppery - berries such as blackberry, blackcurrant, raspberry and also plum - with a delightful, silky feel.

  • The beauty of Merlot is that it's a lovely wine to drink now - but does not require lengthy periods of storage to come of age.

  • Perfect to enjoy with red meat, such as steak, roast lamb, kangaroo, and other game. But no one will look away in disgust if you care to savour it with a good white meat or platter of fish.
