Gartelmann Diedrich Shiraz 2003
With Paul Ippolito
This very good Hunter Valley red is still in its infancy.
Having said that and arguing on one hand how it may be somewhat
of a travesty drinking it now, it's not hard to comprehend
why you may want to polish the bottle off right away.
Gorgeously dark purple with violet tinges coupled with intoxicatingly
seductive rich aromas of ripe spicy Satsuma plums along with
classic blackberries. All upfront full and intense.
Cigar box and leather bouquet characters exude with an amazing
complexity. Full flavoured blackberry, all encompassing on
the palate with good supporting acidity, fine tannins and
a lingering complex length of finish.
A good 7-10 years in this one and a very promising future.
Around $35.
General features of Shiraz:
The taste/aroma is predominantly pepper - very floral, black-pepper,
with blackberry and plums. The cooler climates add a chocolatey
taste and fragrance.
When young, it is a tempting, fruity experience. But it is
flexible enough to be cellared for 25 years and mature into
a lovely mellow drop.
Perfect to enjoy with red meat, white meat, and pizza/pasta
dishes.
