Wine Review: Cape Jaffa Sauvignon Blanc 2004
With Paul Ippolito
Very
pale straw. Classic Sauvignon Blanc varietal intense aromas
of fresh cut grass, herbeousness, cat pee, gooseberry and
kiwi fruit with some canned peas thrown in. Fresh, tangy and
spicy on the palate.
Well integrated and balanced fruit flavours in harmony with
the wine's acid structure. Neither fruit nor acid dominate.
Some distinct gooseberry flavours. The barrel fermentation
has taken the edge off the wine's crispness making it a very
good wine match. Good long length - a fruit driven one.
Drink now and up to 2 years and with some marinated bbq octopus.
Well priced at around $16. Available at CapeJaffaWines.com.au.
Typical features of Sauvignon Blanc are:
- The taste and aroma, depending on growing conditions and
whether it is oaked or unoaked, can be very grassy, herbaceous,
even citric. Sometimes it can be acidic to the point of
having a very pungent aroma, giving a crisp finish. It can
be very fruity with elements of passionfruit, maybe banana.
- Cellaring? Drink it now!
- The acidic taste works in your favour with oily-based
dishes such as salads, and it is perfect with lobster, oysters,
scallops or in fact any type of fish.
