Mount Majura Chardonnay 2003
With Paul Ippolito
Dr
Frank Van de Loo is a really good winemaker who works seemingly
underneath the radar, down in Canberra churning out quality
wines at very reasonable prices. This one is no exception.
My wife is the Chardonnay expert of the household and she
gave this the thumbs up, which is always a promising sign.
She was not wrong with her assessment (not that she rarely
is, are you dear?).
A brilliant lemony yellow, supported by quite a complex nose
with lively yet well balanced acidity. The fruit flavours
are persistent and distinct.
Quite flinty, but still has the peaches and melon components
expected of a varietal Chardonnay but in restrained, tight
and elegant manner. You also get a pronounced stirred lees
character on the nose that dissipates quickly revealing levels
of complexity.
Medium bodied with an extended length of flavour and accompanied
by vanillan French oak character that imparts subtle creaminess
and a partial richness. Try with tortillas with beans and
green salsa. Should cellar 3 years plus. Excellent value at
around $20.

General Features of Chardonnay are:
The taste/aroma is grapefruit, lemon, lime, with maybe a hint
of apricot.
Cellaring? If you wish. But, really, buy something that is
two years old and there is no time like the present!
Just as it dominates the planet, Chardonnay covers practically
the whole food range. Everything from chicken and grilled
meats to exotic creamy seafood.
