Pike and Joyce Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2003
With Paul Ippolito
Pikes Wines from the Clare Valley and Joyson Orchards from
Lenswood, both in South Australia, joined forces to produce
a new range of premium wines - Pike & Joyce.
This new joint venture was established at Lenswood in the
cool climate conditions of the Adelaide Hills and brings together
two families of great standing in South Australia to create
something new.
The vineyard is run on a day to day basis by the Joyson team
under the supervision of Andrew Pike and the hand harvested
fruit is transported to Pikes Clare Valley winery. The synergy
of the two operations has yielded optimal results as evidenced
by this Pinot Noir.
A glorious garnet red colour with earthy tints, this wine
exudes complexity both through fruit driven primary aromas
such as deep dark cherries, ripe plump strawberries but also
secondary mature, fruit and oak influenced flavours on the
palate such as truffles, spice and a rustic earthiness.
Soft and lingering in length, this is one delicious wine
to have with homemade gourmet pizza. An excellent example
of good Pinot Noir from a region that often doesn't get the
credit it deserves.
At about $28, very well priced for such quality. Drink for
up to 3 plus years.

General features of Pinot Noir:
The taste/aroma is predominantly cherry/plummy - red cherry
and black cherry, with berry elements, including strawberry
and raspberry, and a hint of plum. The aroma can sometimes
be even prunish.
Cellaring? If you wish. But, really, it is meant to be consumed
while young.
Perfect to enjoy with lighter meats such as goose and duck,
and gamey meats such as rabbit. It goes superbly with Italian
dishes.
