September in Melbourne Means One Thing...
By Tristan Tancredi
What better place to live than Melbourne during the month of September.
A
concoction of events are centre stage throughout September, culminating
in the creme dela creme of sporting events, the AFL Finals. The
major sporting code in Victoria creates a buzz of excitement throughout
the opening month of Spring, spilling passionate supporters out in
force onto the streets of Melbourne. The atmosphere is electric as
fans converge to watch their sides do battle over the four week finals
campaign, all hoping that their team gains the ultimate glory.
The
city is awash with colour and noise, a vibrant, exciting atmosphere
that only sport can deliver as the season climaxes to that one day in
September (although this year it is October 1).
This year will be a scintillating finals campaign as the gap between the top 4 teams has been trimmed substantially.
Collingwood
is aiming for back to back flags but are shaky entering the finals.
Whilst their biggest threats this year, Hawthorn and Geelong are
playing solid, exciting football.
West Coast has proven everybody wrong this year, and may continue causing upsets in September.
Carlton
look a little wobbly at the wrong time of the year, whilst the Saints
are playing the brand of footy that saw them reach the Grand Final last
year.
And of course, never write off Sydney or Essendon, they may cause an upset or two.
For what its worth, this avid AFL supporter thinks Collingwood will go back to back, even though i hate to say it.
Residents
of Melbourne rejoice, the finals series is upon us. Whether it be
enjoying a quiet beer under the Spring sun with the tele on, heading to
the local pub and cheering on the boys or making the voyage to the MCG and joining 100,000 supporters on sportings day of days.
September is Golden in Melbourne.
