It's that time of year again. Celebrate the new year with fireworks and music with the iconic backdrop of the Sydney Opera House.

Do these song titles ring a bell - Nessun Dorma, Turandot, Tosca, O Sole Mio, The Flower song?

Fans of opera rejoice as the new year is introduced with a vast array of opera selections. An evening of glamour and spectacular featuring ensembles from Bizet, Puccini, Verdi and many more.

Hosted by comedian and actor Jonathan Biggins and featuring opera stars such as Emma Matthews, Elvira Fatykhova, Rosario La Spina, Carlo Barricelli and Joshua Bloom. The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra is conducted by Andrew Greene

With perfect and exclusive viewing of the 9pm fireworks, it surely is a memorable way to spend New Years Eve.

The famous Pre-Gala dinner and the Midnight Party in the Northern Foyer are also available.

There are numerous reasons why Melbourne is the Sporting capital of the world. The Boxing Day Test is one of these reasons.

Web Wombats strong opinion is that the Boxing Day Test is the biggest cricket event on the calendar in Australia.

People flock from all over Australia to watch cricket on its biggest stage, the MCG.

Can Australia reclaim its dominant form that saw it win every Boxing Day test from 1999 to 2007.

With countless trains, trams and buses servicing the G, getting there isn't an issue. Just bring your sunnies, a big hat and sunscreen and settle in for a great day of cricket.

Word of warning, if you want to watch the cricket, steer clear of Bay 13.


Bay Sheffield - Adelaide AdelaideBay Sheffield

December 27th - December 28th

The Annual Bay Sheffield Carnival sees over 350 athletes vie for over $66,000 in prize money over 22 running events.

With free entry and an 11am start over the Christmas break, it's a great opportunity to get out for some fresh air and watch some athletics.

Held at Colley Reserve in Colley Terrace, the 2 day event will feature a multitude of events featuring runners from all over the nation.

The feature race is the 120 metre Bay Sheffield Gift, the winner going down in history as a “Bay Sheff winner”.

With entertainment, drinks and a bar provided, the Bay Sheffield is a great break.


The Taste Festival - Tasmania TasmaniaThe Taste Festival

December 27th

The Annual Taste Festival is a celebration of Tasmanian food, produce, arts, culture and sporting activities.

Learn about the origins of Tasmanian food and its journey from paddock to plate.

Taste the vast array of sample foods on offer. Or indulge in Tasmanias home grown beer, wine and other beverages.

Featuring a taste theatre for food and wine lectures, programs and guided tastings. A Brasserie Precinct featuring Tasmanias Cider making industry is also available.

A retail alley is available for guests to purchase Tasmanian produce.

Bring the kids along with a family fun zone on Hobarts Parliament House Lawn with plenty of activities on offer, such as, sporting activities, outdoor board games, cooking classes, jumping castles, rides, etc.

A forecourt stage will feature acts and buskers throughout the day and convert into a dance stage come night time, featuring Tasmanian based talent.


Woodford Folk Festival - Brisbane Queensland - Woodford Folk Festival

December 27th - January 1st

The Woodford Folk Festival is held every year in the small country town of Woodford, 72km north of Brisbane.

Numerous talents from across the globe converge in Woodford for one of Australias biggest cultural festivities.

The Cat Empire, Xavier Rudd, Pete Murray, JBT and Missy Higgins are just some of the names to have previously graced the stage at the folk festival.

Originally the Maleny Folk Festival, the festival began in 1994 in Woodford after it outgrew the Maleny showgrounds.

Taking place on 500 acres of rural property in a forest setting, this is a festival like no other.

Culminating in the Fire Event on the New Years Day Closing ceremony. The Fire event sees over 20,000 festival goers seated on a grassed hillside to witness a spectacle of Dance, Music and Fire.


Life's A Beach : Music Festival - WA Western AustraliaLife's A Beach - Music Festival

December 10th

The simple pleasures are what are on offer at the Life's A Beach Music Festival. Music, Sun and Beach. It doesn't get much better then that.

Held in Rockingham, about 30 minutes south of Perth, the beachside music festival will incorporate local and international acts.

Featuring BMX, freestyle Motorcross and skate, the festival has an extreme element to it.

Opening at 11am there is plenty of stuff to do throughout the day until the 10pm closing time.

So bring loads of sunscreen and relax at this beachside music festival, because after all, Life's A Beach.
