The
figures are horrific, but one in 10 Australians - 2 million
people - suffers from asthma, the debilitating and potentially
fatal breathing condition.
Asthma is the leading cause of children being sent to Australian
hospitals and is one of the main reasons for employees to
miss days at work.
In 1998, almost 700 people died from the condition.
Asthma affects people with sensitive lung airways and manifests
itself mainly through shortness of breath, wheezing, tightness
in the chest or coughing.
It can't be cured, but can be controlled by avoiding things
that trigger the attacks - like pollens or dust - and taking
doctor-recommended medicines.
Exercise can be beneficial to sufferers as being fit and
healthy seems to ease the condition in many people.
No one is sure what causes asthma, although experts believe
it can be genetic and may be linked to things like eczema
or hayfever.
