When it comes to designing blends Australian winemakers are among the best in the world. These wines can proved to be, in many cases, much more of a reward then straight out varietals.
And you will find one of those now in shops - Fifth Leg's Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Merlot 2011. This drop that has been summed up as, "a serious wine in a fun package" by winemaker Oliver Crawford.
This Cab Sav is indeed a fun filled and quality label, and comes from the Margaret River region of Western Australia and is produced by Devil's Lair Wines. The label is named after the fossil remains of a Tasmanian Tiger with an unexplained fifth leg that was found in a nearby cave. How it turned up there all the way from Tasmania, as well as it's mysterious 5th leg will doubtlessly forever remain a couple of life's mysteries.
The Cab Sav element provides this wine with grippy tannins and blackberry fruit and dark cherry notes. The Shiraz provides spice, plum and pepper, and the Merlot a hint on the palate and nose of juicy red fruits.
This is a wonderful drop costing $17.99 and would go down well at the next Sunday family roast.
A Glass For Lunch:
180km northwest of Melbourne you'll find Victoria's Blue Pyrenees that was established in 1963 the French Champagne houses of Krug & Charles Heidseick, which, at the time, where known as Chateau Remy. And it still respects its French background by producing classic Australian sparklings using the Méthode Champenoise technique.
The Midnight Cuve 2009 is an outstanding sparkling with lots of bubble and an exquisite flavour. It's called "midnight" because the fruit is picked by hand at night to avoid being damaged by the heat. This is to be enjoyed at your next party or celebration. It comes in at $32 a bottle.
